Plano African American Museum
Plano African American Museum is a museum art and history. We tell the story of African/Black Americans, American Decedents of Slaves and the community life in the early 1900 - present day through art and historical exhibits. Our focus is not only on the struggle; however it is mentioned, but the resilience and the determination to thrive in this great nation. We have partnered with several Texas universities, other universities and museums across the United States to bring little known historical facts to light. The Thorton House serves and the physical location of the museum. This is a six room Victorian style house. We use one room for traveling exhibit, a room dedicated to the Douglass Community of Plano and two rooms that are staged as early 1920's bedroom and kitchen. The Thorton house is located in the historic Douglass neighborhood of Plano, Texas. This neighborhood is one of if not the oldest neighborhood in Plano, celebrating 151 years in 2025. This community in the past was predominately Black, prior to being called the Douglass neighborhood it was Colored Town, Negro Town and Kendrick Alley. The community also has two historical markers, The Old Pioneer Cemetery and Shiloh Missionary Baptist which recently celebrated 140 years.

Urban Crust
Nathan and Bonnie Shea bought the 1006 E. 15th St. building in historic downtown Plano in 2007 and began filling it with mouth-watering aromas from their authentic Italian oven when they opened Urban Crust two years later. In the 1800s the building was a harness and saddle shop. The Sheas said they wanted to blend its history with an urban flair. A bridle at the staircase corner serves as a reminder of the building’s past. The Sheas brought in Salvatore Gisellu, former owner of Daddy Jack’s Wood Grill in downtown Dallas, for his expertise in authentic Italian cuisine. Gisellu calls Urban Crust’s oven his “Ferrari with two doors.” The oven features two sections—one for pizzas and the other for entrees. As for baking the right crust, Gisellu and the Sheas worked at the Sheas’ home oven for six months before they found the right blend.
